PSHE
PSHE is delivered every week in both classes in our school, following the highly acclaimed '1Decision' Scheme of Work.
Curriculum Update – September 2026
Following the Department for Education's updated statutory guidance on Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), published in July 2025 and mandatory for all schools from September 2026, our PSHE and RSHE curriculum has been reviewed and updated for the 2026–27 academic year using the latest 1decision mapping and resources. New and expanded areas of learning now include: online safety and the risks of online gaming, gambling-style content and app monetisation; the risks of nicotine addiction from vaping and newer products such as nicotine pouches; further guidance on healthy sleep, screen use and online wellbeing; and additional content on recognising and reporting bullying, harmful content and unsafe online contact. As before, the statutory Relationships and Health Education elements of this curriculum cannot be withdrawn from, but parents retain the right to withdraw their child from specific non-statutory sex education content, in line with our RSHE policy.
Intent
PSHE and RSHE education enables our pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to manage balanced lives and to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Across school, we teach children about how society is organised and governed and we ensure that they experience the process of democracy in school through the school council. We want children to understand their rights and responsibilities as an individual and show empathy and understanding to others. Through themes such as Families and People Who Care for Me, Caring Friendships, and Respectful, Kind Relationships, children build a strong sense of self-worth, learn to recognise healthy and unhealthy relationships, and are encouraged to play a positive role in school life and the wider community, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Implementation
Pupils receive a carefully planned programme using the 1decision scheme to teach PSHE and RSHE, updated to reflect the latest statutory guidance on Relationships Education and Health Education. 1decision provides 17 modules covering themes including Being Safe, Online Safety and Awareness, Wellbeing Online, General Well-being, Physical Health and Fitness, Healthy Eating, Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco and Vaping, Health Protection and Prevention, Personal Safety, Basic First Aid, and Developing Bodies. At Crosby Ravensworth, children are taught PSHE and RSHE in three mixed-age groups so the content can be discussed at age-appropriate levels: Y1 & Y2 (in Class 1), Y3 & Y4 (in Class 2) and Y5 & Y6 (also in Class 2). Sex and relationship sessions, including learning about puberty, conception and changes to the body, are delivered exclusively to children in Years 5 and 6. Parents have a right to withdraw their child from all or part of specific sex education lessons that sit outside the statutory Relationships and Health Education curriculum.
The core of the programme is a series of documentaries and videos with alternative endings, which enable children to explore topics such as friendships, online safety, emotional wellbeing and personal safety in a safe, educational environment. The 1decision videos feature within their collection of over 70 on-screen lesson guides. Please follow this link to the Parent/Carer Zone for an introduction to the 1decision resources and how they can support your child's personal development. Impact
Children leave our school with positive and caring relationships with themselves and their family, friends and peers, as well as a strong feeling of belonging in life. They have excellent knowledge of what it means to lead a healthy and safe lifestyle, both online and offline, and understand how to seek help and support when they need it. Children learn to adapt and empathise whilst developing self-confidence, self-esteem and self-discipline to reach the highest standards of which they are capable. They understand and accept change, including the physical and emotional changes of growing up, and are able to reflect on its impact. As they progress through the school, they learn to understand and communicate within our ever-developing world. Just as importantly, they leave our school with a love of themselves and a desire to make positive contributions towards the wider world as they progress into their KS3 education.
We know that it is important for children at Crosby Ravensworth School to be well prepared for secondary education. Coming from a remote, rural community such as ours, we believe it is extra-important that children discuss difficult topics in depth and are ready for all the emotional challenges that the next step of their journey through life might bring.
